We're excited to introduce ToolDB — an open, community-maintained database of over 81,000 tools across 450 brands.
Whether you're a woodworker tracking your shop inventory, a contractor managing a fleet of power tools, or a developer building the next great tool app — ToolDB is built for you.
What's in the Database
Every tool in ToolDB includes structured, queryable data:
- Name, model number, and UPC — for identification and barcode scanning
- Descriptions and specifications — weights, dimensions, and detailed product info
- Brand and category — organized taxonomy across 450 brands
- Battery platform compatibility — know which batteries work with which tools
- Product images — manufacturer and press kit images hosted on our CDN
The data covers major brands like Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Festool, Knipex, Klein Tools, Wera, Stabila, Wiha, and hundreds more.
The ToolDB App
We also built tooldb.app — a personal tool inventory app powered by the database. It lets you:
- Track your collection with photos, receipts, and purchase details
- Monitor warranties with expiration alerts
- Log maintenance and keep service records
- Track lending so you always know who has your tools
- Export PDF and CSV reports for insurance claims
- Scan barcodes for instant catalog lookup
The app is free to use during our private beta. If you're interested, reach out at hello@tooldb.io for an invite.
Open Data, Open Source
ToolDB is built on open principles:
- Data is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) — free to use, share, and build on
- Code is licensed under AGPL-3.0 — fully open source
- API is free to use with no limits on read access
You can browse the full database at tooldb.io/tools.html, query the REST API, or clone the entire dataset from GitHub.
What's Next
We're actively growing the database and improving the app. Here's what's coming:
- More brands and deeper product coverage
- Community contribution tools
- Enhanced API documentation
- Public launch of the tooldb.app inventory tracker
